Since the Mexican government does not recognize United States insurance policies, you need to purchase Mexican insurance when you go into Mexico.

Coverages that can be purchased for your vehicle are:

Fire and Theft
Property Damage
Civil Liability
Medical Payments
Legal Aid
Travel Assistance

If you are towing a trailer, boat, or another vehicle, they must be listed on the policy with the towing vehicle in order to have liability coverage extented. In order to have physical damage coverage on what is being towed, this can be purchased for an additional premium. If it is not listed and there is an accident or loss, the towing vehicle's insurance could be voided.

If you have a loan on your vehicle, your lender is going to want proof of insurance for the vehicle while it is in Mexico. Also, if you are taking a rental vehicle into Mexico, you must get written permission from the rental car company to take it into Mexico.
